Do you know Nalani Kanaka’ole?

Living in Hilo on Hawai’i Island, Nalani is the Kumu Hula of Halau O Kekuhi, and is the fourth of eight generations to carry the traditions of hula ‘aiha’a. Nalani learned hula from her grandmother and her mother.  She has been teaching hula for the past sixty years.

The Merrie Monarch Festival is held in the Edith Kanaka’ole Multi-Use Stadium, named after Nalani’s mother.  In 2023, at the 60th Anniversary of the Merrie Monarch Festival, the Halau O Kekuhi opened up the Hōʻike with four generations of dancers on stage.

The student of Nalani Kanakaʻole and chosen to carry on the traditions of the Halau O Kekuhi of Hilo, Hawaiʻi, Emii Katoo will lead her halau 「KatooEmii Buyoujuku Hulaarts」, in a special performance with Kumu Hula Nalani Kanakaʻole.  Together they will perform an original chant for Aloha Yokohama 2023, requesting “Resurrection and World Peace.”  There will be traditional dances of Halau O Kekuhi along with other classical mele hula.  Please come and witness this special performance with Kumu Hula Nalani Kanakaʻole at Aloha Yokohama 2023!

ナラニ・カナカオレをご存知でしょうか？

ハワイ島ヒロに住むナラニは、ハラウ・オ・ケクヒのクム・フラであり、フラ『アイ・ハッア』の伝統を受け継ぐ8世代のうちの4人目です。 ナラニは、祖母と母からフラを学び、過去60年にわたり、フラを教え続けています。

メリーモナークフェスティバルは、ナラニの母の名を冠したイディス・カナカオレ・スタジアムで毎年開催されます。 2023年、メリーモナークフェスティバル60周年記念大会では、ハラウ・オ・ケクヒが4世代のダンサーをステージに上げてHōʻikeのオープニングショーを行いました。

ナラニ・カナカオレの弟子で、ハワイ島ヒロのハラウ・オ・ケクヒの伝統を受け継ぐことになったカトーエミイは、自身のハラウである「カトーエミイ舞踊塾フラアーツ」を率いて、クム・フラのナラニ・カナカオレと特別なステージを披露することになりました。 アロハヨコハマ2023のために、”復活と世界平和 “を祈るオリジナルチャントを一緒に公開します。 また、ハラウ・オ・ケクヒの伝統的な踊りや、その他の古典的なメレフラも演舞されます。
